Amazing resourceDecember 14, 2012

This book is an amazing resource for anyone looking for alternative methods of dealing with ADHD.

There are many people who are categorically "against ADHD drugs" and one of the things that has always bugged me is that they have this black and white opinion that is not based on anything at all. This book provides actual, objective, non-hysterical evidence of both the benefits and the potential pitfalls of ADHD drug therapy.

This is not an "anti-medication" book. This is a professionally written, honest, and empirical look at alternative treatments for the sufferers of ADHD. At points it's even funny. It has anecdotes that make it a joy to read compared to most of the non-fiction that I'm used to. It also shows research studies that can actually be used as evidence (so many sources ofalternative ADHD treatment tend to use the anecdotes as the only evidence. This book does not make that mistake.) This book provides the reader with many ADHD treatment options and the expert advice to use them effectively.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for more tools to deal with their own or their children's ADHD or for professionals looking for a readable and empirical guide to understanding the benefits and science behind a wide range of other ADHD treatments.

This is a book that will be staying on my kindle for reference.

Tess Messer is the founder and editor of the award winning ADHD blog, and has also published hundreds of articles on the topic as well. Now she has written this insightful and very helpful book that gives a bigger look at ADHD, its treatments, therapy and other information that can really be very helpful and make a difference. This book is a great read and very well written by the author. Well I wouldn't expect anything less from Messer.

4.0 out of 5 stars ADHD CAN Be ManagedDecember 10, 2012
This review is from: COMMANDING ATTENTION: A PARENT AND PATIENT GUIDE TO MORE ADHD TREATMENT (Kindle Edition)
Tess Messer's book, Commanding Attention, is an indispensible resource. We've lived next door to my sister, Thea, and her daughter, my niece, for about three years now. My niece Dawn was diagnosed early in her life with ADHD-PI. I became aware of Tess Messer's work on the blog she founded as I researched Dawn's problem, trying to better understand her. By the time I found her blog, I had already read a lot about ADHD, but I wasn't really clear about it. Fortunately, Tess' blog does a great job of explaining all aspects of ADHD.

I just bought the book, Commanding Attention, and also bought a copy for my sister. It's on my computer and it covers a lot of ground. It includes chapters on everything from the effects of diet, exercise and sleep to the therapies of the future. It's all there in a way that I can understand it.

There was a lot of interesting information in there that neither my sister or I knew. My niece still struggles with her illness every day, but now we have many more facts and a lot more treatment options and my sister feels more in control of Dawn's problem and treatment..
If you have someone in your life with this problem, check this book. It made a world of difference to Thea, Dawn, and me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Path to SanityDecember 5, 2012
This review is from: COMMANDING ATTENTION: A PARENT AND PATIENT GUIDE TO MORE ADHD TREATMENT (Kindle Edition)
This is a very accessible book on the subject of ADHD treatment. I remember having my adolescent tested years ago and given an automatic and not very differentiated diagnosis and a prescription. We felt like Alice in Wonderland being ordered to take this, but not being told of consequences or alternatives. It was scary. We decided against the drugs and somewhat managed. It would have been wonderful to have had a resource like this book to give us a clearer picture of drug treatment and other paths to follow. The book clears the fog that many of us feel when approaching this subject. It does not put down drug treatment, but explains it and opens other alternative paths and parallel therapies. It is also fun to read, and the writer has a very enjoyable easy and witty style.

Commanding Attention: A Parent and Patient Guide to More ADHD Treatment

Are you a parent or caregiver for someone who’s been diagnosed with ADHD?   Are you wondering if medication is the only treatment that will help the troublesome symptoms of this condition?  Are you looking for other treatments that may enhance the medication that you have been prescribed?

In COMMANDING ATTENTION, author Tess Messer presents an organized, well-researched guide for parents and patients dealing with ADHD.  She has dealt with the condition firsthand as a Physician Assistant and the editor of the award winning Primarily Inattentive ADD blog as well as in in the treatment of own her sons, who have managed extremely well with a combination of therapies drawn from her broad research.

Beginning with an explanation of the causes of the condition to a discussion of how to best evaluate the symptoms, to detailed descriptions of multiple treatments, the author makes the case for a shift in our approach to treating ADHD. Not so quick to rely on medications alone, the author proposes other treatments that, alone or in combination with medication, successfully treat the symptoms of ADHD while helping those with the condition achieve a level of normalcy not possible in years past.

Delving into the findings from research, the benefits of various treatments, the costs, side effects, and the limitations of these therapies, COMMANDING ATTENTION reads like a laymen’s guide to understanding and treating ADHD.  The book also provides an extensive bibliography of resources and references for use by readers.

For so many, ADHD is a condition that, on a daily basis, hinders their ability to succeed.  While drug treatments for ADHD are advancing, some of these treatments come with side effects that make medication treatment an unacceptable option for some patients and parents.  Because of this, many patients discontinue their medications, jeopardizing their health, their mental well-being, and their quality of life.

As more people continue to look for ways to improve the quality of life for those with ADHD, combination therapies are emerging and being pushed to the forefront of treatment. COMMANDING ATTENTION presents these remedies in a concise, easy-to-read format for parents, patients, and professionals.
